**Due to Governor Cooper’s Declaration of Schools Remaining Closed Through May 15th, this contest has been extended through June 1st. Take time to try new recipes, try a 4-H project, research local foods and animal systems, and write about what you’ve learned about living well through COVID-19.**

Every year, Family and Consumer Sciences Agents across the state celebrate and promote “Living Well”. With the recent outbreak of COVID-19, schools are closed and many children and parents are finding themselves at home with major changes to their normal routines. However, this just gives us new opportunities to practice “living well” in different circumstances. Instead of participating in group fitness activities – like baseball and softball practice – maybe we get to play as a family in the backyard. Instead of eating out at restaurants, maybe we get to learn to cook together.

To help focus on the positive aspects of the current situation, and to promote healthy living in all circumstances, North Carolina Cooperative Extension of Montgomery County is sponsoring a youth creative writing contest with the following prompt:  “Thinking specifically about nutrition, physical activity, healthy family relationships, family financial resources, and local food and animal systems, write an essay OR design and illustrate a book to showcase how you and your family are “Living Well” during the COVID-19 outbreak.”  Youth are encouraged to use Extension resources to try a new recipe, a new physical activity, or to enjoy family fun time together and strengthen positive relationships and then share those experiences in their writing. There is no word limit, and creativity is encouraged and expected. The sky is the limit!

A panel of judges will score entries based on:

  1. Creativity
  2. Writing (Punctuation, Spelling, Sentence Structure)
  3. Vocabulary
  4. Central Themes
  5. Use of Extension Materials and Other Credible Resources

One winner from each category will be awarded $20.00 4-H Bucks that can be used toward summer programming, summer camp, etc. for up to two years from the date earned. Categories are: Kindergarten–2nd grade; 3rd–5th grade; 6th–8th grade; and 9th–12th grade.
