Friday was a very special day as the North Carolina 4-H Development Fund and North Carolina 4-H Camps celebrated the establishment of the William M. and Martha M. Garmon 4-H Campership Endowment.

Distributions from the endowment will be used to provide support for youth participating in 4-H camp experiences at any North Carolina 4-H Camp. This past summer, a total of thirty-five campers were able to attend camp at all three NC 4-H Camps that wouldn’t have been able to otherwise, as a result of the endowment.

This endowment is a true testament of the late William and Martha’s legacy and lives, who dedicated themselves to serving youth throughout their careers. William “Bill” Garmon enjoyed a 32-year career with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, where he worked with youth and 4-H leaders until his retirement. Similarly, Martha dedicated her life to serving youth as a third grade and fifth-grade teacher at Cary Elementary School for a total of 32 years.

A formal luncheon celebration was hosted on Friday, September 7, 2018, with Martha and the NC 4-H Center Directors, Stacy Burns of Betsy-Jeff Penn, Keith Russell of Millstone 4-H Camp, and Jennifer Standish of the Eastern 4-H Center, as well as State 4-H Camp Team members Dave Herpy and Angela Brisson, and Susan Colby, Associate Director of the NC 4-H Development Fund. Center Directors exchanged stories of the campers’ experiences who benefited this summer from Bill and Martha’s generosity. A special framed photo, pictured below, was presented to Martha to commemorate the establishment of the endowment.
